A fire broke out at the Rietvlei Zoo Farm entertainment area shortly after 7:00 on Tuesday morning, forcing the temporary closure of a nearby road due to thick smoke.

Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) spokesperson William Ntladi confirmed they received a call at around 7:10 alerting them to the blaze.

“When our teams arrived, the entertainment area was already well covered with fire. Smoke had spread across the road, covering vehicles, and for safety reasons, the road had to be temporarily closed,” Ntladi said.

He added that the upper level of the double-story entertainment area was the part most affected. Firefighters managed to bring the flames under control and are currently damping down hotspots.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established. No casualties have been reported.
