Get ready for school: Key dates and requirements for 2026
Department of Basic Education outlines key school term dates, admission requirements and readiness tips for learners and parents nationwide
The 2026 school year is kicking off on January 14, and parents are gearing up to ensure their children are prepared.
According to the Department of Basic Education, here are the key requirements and dates to note:
School terms:
• Term 1: January 14 – March 27
• Term 2: April 8 – June 26
• Term 3: July 21 – September 23
• Term 4: October 6 – December 9
Admission requirements:
• Identification documents (learner and parent/caregiver)
• Immunisation card or Road to Health chart
• Latest official school report
• Proof of residence
For admissions (Grades R, one and eight):
Academic records, such as the learner’s latest school report (especially for Grade Eight).
The process for applications is usually online via provincial portals (like WCED, GDE), often opening March-April, requiring parents to register details and upload documents.
General readiness:
• Stationery and supplies will be provided by schools via a list outlining the required items.
• Uniforms and sportswear for learners should fit them well for comfort and to adhere to uniform regulations.
• Test home Wi-Fi, check device updates, and ensure your child can access online platforms for assignments.
• Book a health check for the learner at a GP, dental, or optometrist, depending on the learner’s needs, before school starts.
Key advice:
• Complete the five-step process for online admissions (register, address, learner, schools, upload) and check for missing documents.
• Proximity matters for school placement, which prioritises learners living close to the school, so use your actual address.
• Contact your school for exact uniform/stationery lists and specific advice.
