Fred Barnicoat memorial show celebrates avicultural legacy

The Gouldian Finch Society will honour one of South Africa’s avicultural pioneers with a memorial show and auction in Alberton, celebrating excellence, mentorship and the enduring passion for birdkeeping.

The enduring legacy of one of South Africa’s most respected aviculturists will be honoured next month when the Gouldian Finch Society (GFS) hosts the Fred Barnicoat Memorial Show & Auction in Alberton.

Taking place on February 7, the event commemorates the life and contribution of the late Fred Barnicoat, a pioneer of South African aviculture whose influence continues to shape the hobby today.

A lifelong birdkeeper, breeder, mentor and educator, Barnicoat was widely admired for his quiet dedication, depth of knowledge and willingness to guide both novice and experienced aviculturists.

His contribution to the field extended beyond the aviary.

Barnicoat authored respected avicultural work, including White Breasted Mutation of the Gouldian Finch, published in Avicultural Magazine (Vol. 73, 1967), and played a foundational role in supporting clubs and societies across the country, including the GFS.

The memorial show reflects the breadth of his passion and will take place at Weltmeyer Stables, 75 Fore Street, Alberante.

What to expect

While Gouldian Finches remain the flagship species of the society, the exhibition will feature an expanded schedule that includes Parrotfinches, Zebra and Bengalese Finches, Foreign Aviary Birds, African species, mules and hybrids, and decorated cages.

Together, the classes celebrate the diversity and creativity of aviculture that Barnicoat championed throughout his life.

The event will be hosted in alignment with the standards of the Avicultural Federation of South Africa (AFSA), ensuring nationally recognised judging criteria, classifications and ring identification practices.

AFSA’s involvement reinforces unity, consistency and quality within the hobby principles Barnicoat strongly believed were essential to aviculture’s growth.

The 2026 memorial show will also be incorporated into the prestigious GFS Supreme Show, one of the most anticipated events on the avicultural calendar.

The Supreme Show showcases top-quality breeder-rung Gouldian Finches from the previous year, judged on feather condition, colour accuracy, proportion, health and vitality.

By combining the Supreme Show with the memorial event, the GFS highlights both excellence in breeding and the enduring influence of a respected mentor.

Continued mentorship

Beyond competition, the day is expected to draw a wide community of aviculturists.

Informal exchanges of knowledge on genetics, conditioning and breeding practices remain a defining feature of GFS events, echoing the mentorship culture Barnicoat helped establish.

The popular GFS Live Auction will again offer quality stock from respected breeders, providing opportunities for newcomers and established exhibitors alike to strengthen their bloodlines while supporting the society’s ongoing initiatives.

The Fred Barnicoat Memorial Show & Auction stands as more than a single date on the calendar.

It is a gathering rooted in gratitude, education and shared passion values that defined Barnicoat’s life and continue to guide South African aviculture.
