Joburg Property Company to host Rosettenville sanitary lanes open day

Property owners can legally manage lanes after open day.

The Joburg Property Company is organising an open day focused on the Rosettenville sanitary lanes, scheduled for March 3 from 10:00 to 12:00 at the Southern Suburbs Recreation Centre, 1A Berg Street, Oakdene.

A sanitary lane (often referred to in municipal contexts as a sanitary alley or service lane) is a narrow, dedicated public thoroughfare(walkway) located behind or between buildings in a city, specifically designed to provide rear access for sanitation services, utilities, and emergency services.

The event aims to provide property owners with information about the management and legal status of lanes adjacent to their properties, especially portions that may have been enclosed by previous owners.

Property owners are not permitted to construct permanent structures on the sanitary lanes.

The lanes may be used only temporarily for parking, gardening, or access.

The council retains unrestricted access for maintenance and repairs of services located within the lanes.

The open day addresses common questions about lane ownership, including whether a lane exists near a property and the validity of lane-management agreements.

The management of a lane is indefinite and can be transferred to the next property owner upon request, enabling owners to legally manage the lane after clarifying its status with the council.
