End of an era at Animal Anti-Cruelty League Johannesburg
With Tony Guia’s departure, the organisation looks ahead while continuing its vital work for animals and the community.
The Animal Anti-Cruelty League Johannesburg (AACL-JHB) has announced, with sadness and gratitude, that its CEO and chairperson, Tony Guia, stepped down on April 30.
Guia has been part of AACL-JHB for 39 years. He started as a volunteer for 13 years and later served as CEO and chairperson for 26 years (2000–2026).
During this time, he helped grow the organisation into a trusted leader in animal welfare. He played a key role in expanding its services and promoting the protection of animals across Johannesburg and South Africa.
“Tony’s unwavering commitment, passion and leadership have left an indelible mark on this organisation,” said the AACL-JHB management team. “While we will deeply miss his presence, we extend our sincere thanks and wish him every success in the next chapter of his journey.”
As the organisation enters a new phase, AACL-JHB will begin the process of appointing a new chairman and committee. In the meantime, the current management team will continue to ensure stability and the delivery of services to the community and the animals in its care.
The AACL-JHB remains focused on its mission and positive about the future. The organisation has called on supporters to stand with it during this time of change. Ongoing support from donors, partners and the public is important to help continue and grow its work.
“While this moment marks the end of an era, it also opens the door to new opportunities,” the management team added. “We are hopeful and energised for what lies ahead, and we remain dedicated to serving the community that relies on us every day.”
