8 Joburg ‘March Hot Spots’ identified ahead of planned protests

A watchlist for risky areas has been formed as protests against foreign nationals begin.

Authorities and logistics operators have been placed on alert after eight areas across Johannesburg were listed as March and March hot spots with a high risk level ahead of planned protest action against foreign nationals from June 29 to June 30.

The advisory covers major highway corridors, CBD nodes, and trading hubs where disruption, intimidation, and crowd-control incidents are expected.

The risk assessment flags three national routes as critical points.

The N1 highway corridor from Midrand, Centurion, to the Johannesburg western bypass is marked as high risk for road blockades, freight disruption, commuter delays, and opportunistic crime.

The N3 highway corridor through Germiston, Alberton, Heidelberg and Ekurhuleni is cited for freight disruption, truck intimidation and access issues to industrial clients.

On the N12 highway corridor around Benoni, Boksburg and Germiston, risks include road disruption and industrial-area spillover, with freight delays likely.

In the city, Johannesburg CBD / Newtown / Mary Fitzgerald Square is listed due to crowd gathering, traffic disruption and the potential for protest spill-over into the CBD.

West of the city, Main Reef Road through Fordsburg, Crown Mines, Selby and Mayfair is flagged for march movement, road closures and disruption near commercial and industrial nodes.

Two major trading hubs are also featured; the China Shopping Centre in Crown Mines is identified as a direct protest focus, with risks of intimidation and shop closures due to its visibility to foreign traders.

Dragon City in Fordsburg faces similar concerns regarding direct protest focus, traffic disruption, and crowd-control risks.

All eight areas are rated high risk in the SAPS operational table.

Motorists, freight operators and businesses are advised to plan alternative routes.
