The City of Johannesburg hosted the Minister of Finance for a frank and productive engastate of the City’s finances on July 21.

The city presented an honest picture of the progress made, the challenges that remain, and the work underway through the Inner City Rejuvenation programme and investment in critical infrastructure.

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwane promised to return in September after meeting with the City of Johannesburg’s mayor, Dada Morero, members of the mayoral committee, and senior city officials, with whom they agreed on practical interventions to strengthen the City’s finances.

Godongwane said they had a good meeting with the City of Johannesburg. “I had a meeting with the mayoral committee and some senior officials. We’ve had a successful meeting to develop a nice programme, and I’m coming back in September to follow up on the progress on the issues we’ve agreed upon with the mayor, the mayoral committee, and senior management. I think we’re going to succeed in turning Johannesburg around,” he said.

Morero thanked the Minister for the engagement. “Thank you, Minister, and we had a very progressive meeting, touched on the issues that the Minister had raised before and what progress we have made as the city. But it was also key to take the Minister into confidence about the city’s current financial position, so he would know what interventions he would need to make to ensure we succeed.

“He has also made a good commitment that in the month of September we’ll be coming back to check on progress on the key interventions that we all agreed on. So we had a very successful meeting with the Minister of Finance and thank you very much, Minister,” he said.

The engagement concluded with agreement on practical interventions to strengthen the City’s financial position and accelerate service delivery.

National Treasury reaffirmed that the Jo’burg Plan is solid, providing a credible foundation for the City’s financial recovery.

The City remains focused on laying the foundation for a financially resilient Johannesburg that delivers on its promise to every resident.
