There are two questions that we have to ask ourselves. The first is ‘Where am I going?’ and the second is ‘Who will go with me?’ – Dr Howard Thurman
Imagine two people were separately asked the above questions:
1. Where are you going? The first person answers, “Cape Town”, the master then gives her the keys and says, “Here are my two-seater private jet’s keys and you will fly there.”
2. Who will go with you? I will get myself the licensed pilot to fly me, answers the first person. Two hours later she is in Cape Town.
The second person however is asked, “Who would you like to go with to Cape Town?” Peter my friend, because I like him, answers the second person. The master then hands him the two-seater private jet’s keys and says, “Here are the keys to fly to Cape Town and see you there in two hours.” Two hours later she is still stuck in Jo’burg. She has the keys, jet, friend and herself – all the resources but chose the wrong person, both of them cannot fly. So, take the time to ‘know where you are going’ before you choose ‘who will go with you!’ This is the same with your relationship, career, journey, dream, etc.
The two above scenarios clearly show how critical the sequence of asking the two questions. Most people are stuck and will never get to Cape Town, the ‘Promised Land’, because they cannot fly the jet and have also chosen someone who cannot fly this jet. So, the key is to know, “where you are going before you can choose who will go with you.” Simply put, know your destination before choosing the resources as these chosen resources may cause problems instead of bringing solutions.
