Allow me to join the fray regarding the utterly cheap politicking comments contained in the response of Manny de Freitas.
Perhaps this gentleman seems to be a dual passport holder. The priority one will allow him to catch the first flight back to his native land when the going gets tough.
The second one which has an upper hand is the one that gave him the right to be nominated for the seat in parliament. Such people should be reminded that this freedom was attained through sacrifices of many peace loving South Africans irrespective of their colour, sex, religion or creed.
Part of the basic principle of democracy is the freedom of choice and expression. Ms Bev Turk, for her to join the party of her choice further strengthens our basic democratic principle that this country belongs to all who lives in it. When the world icon Nelson Mandela passed away, the majority of peace loving people all over the world saluted this gallant peace loving individual, who paid the highest price by ensuring that we and our children live in a democratic dispensation, and mind you, that there were neither blacks nor whites who saluted this icon, but South Africans were united in their diversity.
Manny de Freitas demonstrates his low level of understanding democracy by mentioning that Bev Turk’s move to the ANC was not a personal matter, what utterly rubbish. Freedom to choose is an individual’s behavioural democratic right as enshrined in the constitution of the Republic of South Africa. Perhaps some people of the De Freitas calibre confuses that party’s principles, namely the individual’s behavioural pattern.
In a nutshell: Bev Turk joining the ANC is a lesson to the ruling party that the ANC is not a party for blacks, but a home for all those who subscribe to the notion that this country belongs to all of us who lives in it. The National Question, which the ruling party has been shying away from, must now top the agenda in order to achieve and build a nation of patriots. His comments smack negatively to the DA, a party of privileged minority whites who refuses to accept the reality of a majority rule.
Stop this nonsensical notion of thinking that all whites belong to the DA or Freedom Front. All citizens have a right to choose their political home irrespective of the colour of their skin.
