TURFFONTEIN – Excitement is mounting as the time is drawing closer for the Avis International Jockeys Challenge.
The first three Challenges were all won by Team South Africa, but the International Team came back with a vengeance. They were victorious in 2011 and 2012. The big question is who will walk away with the much sought after trophy in 2013? Pride is at play this year and the South Africans are conscious of having home advantage so they will be looking to appease their fans after the disappointment of the past two years.
The South African team will be captained by the reigning South African champion jockey Piere Strydom. His team will include Anton Marcus, Sean Cormack, Robbie Fradd, Anthony Delpech and S’Manga Khumalo.
The International team will be captained by Richard Hughes who is no stranger to our shores. He will be accompanied by Jamie Spencer, Johnny Murtagh, Tom Queally of Ireland, Hugh Bowman of Australia and Gregory Benoist of France.
A number of commercial sponsors are supporting this exciting event which will be taking place at Turffontein (night racing), Kenilworth and Clairwood Racecourse on November 15, 16 and 17 respectively. Avis, Egyptair, Emperors Palace and Velotex have been involved in the Challenge in previous years and have reaffirmed their support. Also on board is Sun International for the first time this year.
The racing industry has united in putting together an exciting series offering good fare and entertainment. The racing partners are Gold Circle, Phumelela Gold Enterprises, Phumelela Gaming and Leisure Limited, Betting World and the Racing Association.
The Avis International Jockeys Challenge comprises four races on each day, with mounts being drawn and a points system deciding the winning team. The runners will be seeded before the draw in order to balance the chances of the two teams as much as possible.
