Top talent in sprint canoeing

The top talent in sprint canoeing to represent the Gauteng Team at the upcoming interprovincial races.

GAUTENG Canoe Union Sprint Championship took place at Roodeplaat Dam on March 29 to identify the top talent in sprint canoeing to represent the Gauteng Team at the upcoming interprovincial races.

Paddlers participated in a cross section of races with distances of 1 000m, 500m, 200m and a long distance race of 2 000m. The points that are earned for positional finishes at these races are added up to reward the winners of the total points among the races, and the Victor or Victrix Ludorum medals are presented at the end of the day’s racing for the accumulated events.

Peter Chissano from the Johannesburg Canoe Club based at Wemmer Pan resides in Turffontein achieved a silver medal in the competition, securing his position in the team selected to represent Gauteng at the SA Sprint Championship, which takes place over Easter at Roodeplaat Dam.

Alex Masina, from the same club, finished first in the u.16 age category to take home the gold medal.

The two boys will also participate at the SA Schools Interprovincial and Interschool competitions at the end of April, and the marathon championships in May and June.
