ALBERTON Cricket Club’s juniors took on a touring Indian side recently, ensuring an entertaining sporting event.
On Saturday, June 18, the Alberton Cricket Club’s u.15 side hosted the Indian Rising Hope Sports Sanstar Academy side at the Alberton Oval.
The tour organiser, Ajay Rajput, included Alberton on the tour itinerary as Alberton is known to be a competitive side that treats its guests well on and off the field of play.
Alberton went in to bat first and scored 165 for eight in the allotted 30 overs. The opening stand of 28 between Xolani Xaba and Khaya Nyamathe got the home side off to a steady start. Team captain Khaya batted on to reach 35 before his wicket fell.
The wickets tumbled regularly after that, until Piero du Toit entered the crease and scored 47 runs to steady the ship. At the end Callum Brown scored a quick-fire 20 runs off 14 balls for Alberton to post a total of 165 runs.
The best bowler for the touring side was Roham More who ensured an Alberton middle order collapse with three caught-and-bowled wickets.
When the Indian team went in to bat, the Alberton bowlers gave them very little to play with and Nathan MacKaiser took two wickets, while Eckard Becker weighed in with a wicket maiden. Other players who took wickets were Baadal Parag, Tarquin Nel and Marco Frederico. Good bowling and sharp fielding culminated in two run-outs, ensuring that the visitors were 122 for eight after 30 overs. Alberton won by 43 runs.
Proud coach Kevin Chitunga from Alberton Cricket Club was congratulated by all for his team’s performance and he wished the Rising Hope Sports Sanstar Academy all the best for the rest of their South African tour.
