Tommy Gun to return to the ring
Call to Glory will be presented by Golden Gloves Promotions on September 1.
SHOOTING from the hip, will Thomas ‘Tommy Gun’ Oosthuizen be deadly again as he makes his welcome return to the ring in an action-packed five-bout boxing tournament?
Call to Glory will be presented by Golden Gloves Promotions in conjunction with Emperors Palace on September 1. Doors will open at 7pm.
Exciting times await both Oosthuizen and his opponent, the bulky fighter from the Smith’s gymnasium, Thabiso Mchunu, when they climb in the ring to fight for the African Boxing Union (ABU) Cruiserweight belt.
If Oosthuizen is on target he will elevate his professional career again to the level of a few years ago when he was one of South African’s best boxing prospects. He is a former International Boxing Organisation (IBO) world champion in two weight classes, having held the super middleweight title from 2011 to 2014, and the light heavyweight title in 2015.

To date, he has 30 fights to his record: 27 wins with 16 KOs, one loss and two draws.
In 2017 he only fought twice: on April 28, 2017, against Said Mbelwa for the ABU Light Heavyweight title and a month later against Igor Mikhalkin in Hamburg, Germany, for the vacant IBO Light Heavyweight belt, but picked up a loss.
“I am positive for this fight and thanks to Rodney Berman who gave me yet another chance and my trainer Harold Volbrecht who made everything possible for me to train well and prepare for this fight.”
On the other hand, Sean Smith has a polished Mchunu who is one of the most fierce punchers in the country. Mchunu also needs this win to progress to bigger things and will not want this one to slip away from him.
“It must be fan-friendly. Thabiso must show he can compete at the highest level under the bright lights,” said Smith. “But it could be difficult; Tommy might spoil if he feels Thabiso is stronger.”
The Smith camp believes they have a shot at the title and that this is the biggest challenge the boxer will face. Mchunu’s record stands at 23 fights, 19 wins with 12 KOs and four losses with three KOs.
Both boxers will be coming out on the evening firing their best shots at each other, it just depends who will be on target and produce a clear-cut performance to claim the belt.
The main undercard of the evening will belong to the 34-year-old Ryno Liebenberg and the younger 26-year old Alfonso Tissen. They will fight for the ABU Super Middleweight belt.
Lusanda Kominisi will take on Michael Mokoena in another ABU Lightweight title 12-rounder.
Returning back to South Africa, Jade Karam will meet Cowan Ray in a four-round middleweight fight.
Opening the show will be prospect Keaton Gomes who will take on Tshilidzi Mulaudzi in a cruiserweight bout over four rounds.
