[GALLERY + VIDEO]: Pastor FC winners of soccer tournament in La Rochelle

SOUTHSIDE FC hosted a successful tournament, which was won by Pastor FC after edging Clever Boys in the final on October 5 in La Rochelle.

The structure of the tournament was group bout, with the two teams with more points qualifying to the final.

Four teams stemming from different areas battled it out for the trophy, medals and prize money.

First match

Pastor FC and Clever Boys opened. With both teams playing the same style, it proved to hard for either team to boss the other around.

But Clever Boys proved to be better by dominating in the middle of the field in the first 15 minutes.

Clever Boys looked to capitalise on their early dominance when their striker pulled through Pastor’s defence, only to be denied by Pastor’s number one shotstopper, Siyabonga Nkosi.

The match looked as if it will go to the dressing room goalless, but Pastor’s skipper, Siyabonga Mbatha, had other ideas as he stunned Clever Boys with a rebound ball to give his side the lead.

The second half had no spark or entertaining play as Pastor parked the bus. The match ended with Pastor claiming three points.

Second match

Southside needed to impress home fans when they took on Romania Rovers from Migson Manor.

The home side showed tenacity and hunger going forward more often, but failing to combine their final touches in front of goals.

With fans egging the home side on to give them a goal, a gap at the back opened, which gave Rovers a chance to take advantage of their sloppiness as they took the lead, which they held onto.

Second round

Romania and Pastor needed to win their upcoming matches to advance to the final, but they failed to do so as Romania lost their match against Clever Boys 2-1 and Pastor shared the spoils with Southside.

Third round

All four teams went into the final game of the group stages knowing a victory will send them through to the final.

Clever Boys and the home side played to a goalless draw, sending the home side packing and seeing Clever Boys booking a spot in the final.

Pastor needed to avoid defeat against Rovers to advance and that’s exactly what they did as they outclassed Rovers 3-1.

Final

Pastor and Clever Boys renewed their rivalry in an epic and nail-biting encounter.

Both teams were very cautious at the back, not going forward the way they normally do.

After 30 minutes of play with neither team willing to score the match went straight to lottery of penalties and Pastor won 5-4.
