Jayvee accumulates wealth of knowledge in World Skills Competition
Verwoerd Park’s Jayvee Estologa has brought back remarkable skills from Switzerland which he will hone and make them his own to improve his craft.

Jayvee Estologa has found his passion and is working hard at bringing pleasure to people’s taste buds while at the same time making a name for himself as a respected chef.
The 22-year-old Alberton High School alumnus recently got back from Switzerland after taking part in the World Skills International Competition 2022 Special Edition in the patisserie and confectionery skills.
His experience of working at The Test Kitchen Carbon and winning gold at the provincial and national competitions prepared him to take on the competition.
Competing abroad was a privilege for him as he got to witness other countries’ techniques and creativity which they used for their competition.
“The moment we arrived at Zurich, it just became an adventure. At first, I had to adapt to the culture and lifestyle, which was way different from the one we have in South Africa. The place was super clean and efficient and most of all, the people and the competitors from other countries were very friendly,” said Jayvee.
The days leading up to his showcase were nerve-wracking as he competed with other contestants from over the globe.

“I had to adapt my recipes and mindset because their ingredients and equipment were different from the ones we have in South Africa. We had to showcase a circus theme. When the time came when I had to showcase my test project for pastry, all my nerves disappeared,” he explained.
With help from his mentor, Chef Nicolas van der Walt, he said he was able to overcome his fears.
“Switzerland was a great eye-opener for me that I still have far more to learn regarding the many techniques and methods. My journey to becoming a chef started at Alberton High. Mrs Faia, one of my very first mentors, showed me that if you have a passion for the hospitality industry, it will take you far someday,” said Jayvee.
Nicolas, who sparked Jayvee’s passion for pastry, taught him everything about the art including a sugar and chocolate showpiece and also helped him prepare for the competition.
He reiterated that having the opportunity to work for Luke Dale Roberts is amazing.
