New era dawns for Southern Suburb Boxing Club
The Fight with Insight project at Box Office Gym in the southern suburbs had a triumphant start to the year, with three boys earning their amateur licenses.
The year started on a winning note for the Fight with Insight project at Box Office Gym when three boys gained their amateur fighting licenses, signalling a new era for Southern Suburbs Boxing Club.
The resurgence comes after a hiatus of four years, with the absence of a championship ladder prompting Anton Gilmore to breathe life back into the club. Despite hosting 11 Masterbox and White Collar events in the past two years, Gilmore’s true passion lies in nurturing champions, reminiscent of his success story with Paul Kamanga.
Gilmore said Kamanga, a once impoverished Rosettenville youth, transformed under the club’s guidance from 27 amateur fights to a world title bout in Russia and 19 professional fights in eight years.
“We are now determined to replicate such success stories because we train 36 underprivileged kids from the neighbourhood, including promising talents like Success Ngobeni and Bennie Lafua.
“The club is renowned not only for its talent development but also for its fitness classes, including FitBox and Pure Boxing. These classes offer a rigorous calorie-burning workout, blending cardio and muscle-retention training.
Members appreciate not only the physical benefits but also the mental acuity gained from stress relief through boxing training.
“Training sessions are held at 17:00, Monday to Thursday, with a Saturday boot camp at 08:30. We boast several professional fighters under its umbrella, adding to the club’s credibility.
“A highlight on the horizon is the November Giant event, where a touring team of Olympic-quality fighters will face off against champions from the Fight with Insight project.
“Notably, one prospect from the project is eyeing a spot in this year’s Olympic squad. Former boxer David Rajuli, now a world champion in Germany, plans to return to his roots, participating in the November Giant alongside the amateur team he will bring to SA. The event will feature a pro-am showcase, with details to be unveiled when confirmation is received,” said Gilmore.
