The Southside Stormers Basketball Club has etched its name into the history books after claiming their second consecutive championship title at the prestigious Katlehong Raptors Annual Basketball Tournament, held over the weekend of October 18–19.
The tournament, which featured over 15 elite basketball clubs from across Gauteng, proved to be a true battleground for youth basketball excellence. Once again, the Southside Stormers U16 boys rose above the rest to defend their crown.
Having dominated the inaugural tournament in 2024, the Stormers returned with even greater determination, skill, and teamwork to prove that their success was no fluke. This year’s triumph confirms their status as one of Gauteng’s rising forces in youth basketball.
The club’s U18 boys also delivered an impressive performance, reaching the finals and securing a proud second-place finish against some of the most competitive teams in the province.
Speaking after the tournament, chairman and coach Nathi Madubaduba expressed immense pride and heartfelt gratitude toward the players and supporters.
“It’s an honour to witness the growth and dedication of our boys, both U16 and U18. I’m sincerely grateful to our U18 team for their resilience and heart in reaching the finals, and of course, incredibly proud of our U16s for defending their title. This is a young, talented, and hardworking group of players who, in time, will graduate to our senior squad and carry the club even further,” he said.

Madubaduba also acknowledged the growing support from parents and the community.
“We are especially thankful for the parents who showed up to support their kids. That presence means everything, not only to the players but to the development of basketball in the south of Johannesburg. Together, we’re trying to build something bigger to give these young people a chance to dream, to develop, and to stay away from the negative social influences that often surround them,” he noted.
However, the road ahead remains challenging for the club. As a self-funded organisation, Southside Stormers continues to operate without external financial support, a reality that makes their victories all the more remarkable.
“We are calling on any individuals, businesses, or organisations willing to partner with us through sponsorships or donations. With proper resources, we can build a stronger, more formal development structure that ensures the future of basketball in our region,” said Madubaduba.
In closing, Madubaduba extended special appreciation to the club’s secretary, Lindelani Mazibuko, for his consistent presence and unwavering support:
“Mr Mazibuko has been a pillar in our club’s journey. His dedication to the tournament and to the club’s broader development has been instrumental in our success,” shared Madubaduba.
As Southside Stormers celebrate this incredible achievement, their message is clear: This is just the beginning! With talent, heart, and the right support, the club is set to reach even greater heights, both on and off the court.
