The installation of the solar heating systems at the Reuven Complex for pensioners is almost completed, and the committee and the residents are overjoyed to say the least.

It now means that the pensioners can have hot water 24 hours a day at no extra cost. It also means that they will save 40 or 50 per cent on their pre-paid electricity cost, which means they have a little extra money to buy some of the basic necessities.

It was a long struggle for the committee after knocking on so many doors, going to various departments, sending letters, emailing, faxes, phone calls and personal calls, all to no avail.

We were told to try and contact Mr Xulu, MD for City Power; we wrote him a letter, pleading for a positive response.

We received an unexpected call from Mr Hope Makgamatha (Project Co-ordinator for City Power) and he wanted to have a meeting with us almost immediately and we expected the worst, but it was just the opposite. He told us that Mr Xulu from City Power instructed him to start almost immediately with the installation of the solar heating panels; he said the panels will be delivered the following day. We were delighted and overjoyed.

On behalf of the Committee and the residents of Reuven Complex, we wish to express our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Mr Xulu and Mr Makgamatha, for instilling so much joy into the hearts of many of the struggling pensioners. Many of them have faulty or no geysers, some never knew what it is not to have the luxury of hot water in their flats.

PS. We had so many calls and requests from the residents of Bellavista, Moffat View and Anne Burger Retirements Complexes for the installation of these Solar Geysers; we trust that the authorities will give attention to the pensioner’s plight.
