Ligstad is in need of volunteers

Become a volunteer at Ligstad.

Every non-profit organisation needs volunteers, but at Ligstad even more so.

Eighty per cent of their work in the community is done by volunteers who support Ligstad’s vision and mission and want to give of themselves to make Alberton an even better place to call home.

In the process, they discover their worth and dare to take on life’s challenges.

In need of volunteers

“It is in giving that we discover our worth. So many times we convince ourselves that we do not have much to offer others in enriching their lives. That thought pattern keeps us entrapped and we seldom venture out by risking to become involved as a volunteer in our community,” said Alida Jooste, social worker.

Ligstad is an organisation that functions with only seven permanent staff members in three departments. It is a deliberate decision as Ligstad wants to empower the community to care for their community members.

They are currently urgently looking for volunteers who are called to offer their time, skill and care to the community Ligstad serves.

Special person

Carol Guest is one community member who needs a special mention. She approached Ligstad in October 2020 offering her services as a volunteer.

She found her niche in the kitchen where she has been on duty every day since that day, feeding not only the tummies of the children but also their souls with her softspoken nature.

Carol was thanked on a special occasion by the staff and children on April 1.

Contact them

Not every volunteer has that much time to offer, and Ligstad accommodates the volunteers as their available times allow.

The greatest need right now is volunteers assisting Ligstad’s children with their homework during the morning and afternoon. In the light of the schools’ different hours, many children attend the aftercare full day on the days they do not attend school.

Their homework is then taken care of in the morning for the staff and volunteers to attend to the children that come from school in the afternoon.

Volunteers are screened and should they be fit to work with the children they can serve as homework volunteer.

There are other programs where volunteers can also assist. For further information, you are welcome to contact Alida on 079 693 3666 or alida.jooste@ligstad.co.za
