High-speed chase leads to arrest of suspected hijacker

A 30-year-old suspect was found with an unlicensed firearm in his possession with 11 live rounds of ammunition.

Members of Germiston Flying Squad and Gauteng Highway Patrol on April 8 at 4.30pm received a complaint of a hijacked vehicle in Alberton.

Members proceeded to the given coordinates where the hijacked vehicle was spotted along Elizabeth Street in Randhart.

They signalled the driver to stop the grey BMW, but the driver increased his speed and drove out of Alberton, heading west on the N12. With law enforcement in pursuit, the driver then took Kliprivier off-ramp and drove into Turffontein.

Germiston Flying Squad communications officer Sgt Ntombikayise Ngcobo said two suspects alighted from the vehicle, leaving it abandoned along Leonard Street in Turffontein; the police chased them on foot.

Suspects passed Gold Street and when they were about to approach Koll Street, one of the suspects started shooting at the police. A member of a tracker company was injured.

“The suspect who had fired shots was arrested when he was trying to jump over a house wall. He was found with an unlicensed firearm in his possession with 11 live rounds of ammunition. The other suspect ran away.

“A case of possession of hijacked vehicle, possession of unlicensed firearm with ammunition and attempted murder has been opened at Booysens SAPS.

We urge community members to stay alert and report any suspicious or criminal activity to the nearest police station or call 10111,” she said.

Investigations into the hijacking continue.
