Toiletries donated at Mara Primary School

FEDUSA donated toiletries and sanitary pads for the learners at Mara primary school to share love and appreciation.

On July 18, the Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) marked 67 minutes of Mandela Day by giving sanitary pads and toiletries to learners at Mara Primary School in Naledi.

Various stakeholders such as the University of Johannesburg, Old Mutual, PSA and NAPTOSA also joined the initiative to commemorate celebrate Nelson Mandela Day with the learners.

As part of the 67 minutes of service, a productive discussion about the value of maintaining cleanliness and hygiene was held for both girls and boys from Grade 4 up until 7.

“Today we decided to provide sanitary towels to the learners of Mara primary because we want to avoid seeing young girls being unable to attend school when they are on their periods,” said Brenda Modise, Social Policy and Gender Officer at FEDUSA.

According to Modise, Tata Nelson Mandela performed a significant role for the people of South Africa and as FEDUSA they value Mandela Day.

“What we did today was a simple gesture for the kids because we want them to feel valued, but more than anything else we never ever want to see our kids feel left behind especially here in the townships.

“This was a small token of appreciation to say that we are here for them today and always,” said a Shop Steward at NAPTOSA, Bianca Mussa.

Mara Primary School Principal, Lawrence Nndanduleni Mukosi said he was delighted to see such significant stakeholders choose to celebrate Mandela Day with his learners.

He continued to say that since 2017 the school has not been performing well, so the SGB and the staff as a whole have been working together to try and find stakeholders who can assist the school re-profile.

“Having FEDUSA choose Mara primary is heart-warming because it brings lively activities as well as meeting the needs of the kids who are underserved in the community. It is part of the collective effort for us to form a strategic alliance and a relationship,” said Mukosi.
