Soweto water police recover body of 12-year-old boy from water-filled site
Police divers recovered the body of a boy from an excavated water-filled site in Lefhureng, after a drowning incident on August 23.
Divers from the Johannesburg Water Policing and Diving Services recovered the body of a 12-year-old boy who drowned in an excavated water-filled site in Lefhureng, Soweto, on August 23.
The incident occurred at about 16:00 near the corner of Umvumvu and Red Ivory streets, where divers were deployed following reports of the drowning.
According to Gauteng Police Emergency Services, divers arrived at the scene and found the boy’s body in an excavated site filled with water to a depth of about 1.4m. The site had reportedly filled with water after a pipe burst.

Members retrieved the body and handed it over to Protea police officers at the scene. An inquest docket will be opened, while further investigations will be conducted.
Gauteng Police Emergency Services urged the public to take precautionary measures to prevent further loss of life around open water.
People entering dams, rivers or other bodies of water for any activity are advised to wear life jackets.
Parents of young children near open water are also urged to educate them about the associated dangers and ensure they are constantly supervised.
