Elderly women honoured with gifts and celebration in Protea Glen

Winny Radebe Foundation honours elderly women on Women’s Day

Winny Radebe Foundation commemorated Women’s Day by supporting elderly women in Protea Glen. The foundation also honoured women aged 80 and above, including a 105-year-old gogo, who received a wheelchair as a gift.

Winny Radebe, founder and chairperson of the Winny Radebe Foundation NPO, together with her team, visited Kingfisher Street in Ext 14, Protea Glen, on Sunday, August 9, to celebrate Women’s Day with elderly women from the community.

The foundation took the gogos to Jiba Lifestyle, where they were treated to a day of entertainment, food and gifts as a way of recognising and appreciating their contribution to their families and communities.

One of the most important women honoured during the day is 105-year-old Maoketsa Lucy Rasekoba, who was presented with a new wheelchair by the foundation. The foundation wanted to honour women who have reached such an advanced age, recognising that relatively few people live to see their 100s.
Also honoured during the day was 91-year-old Gladys Kgoreoadira, who received a cake, a blanket and food from the foundation. Anna Phahlane, 87, received similar gifts and enjoyed the Women’s Day celebration alongside the other gogos.

According to Radebe, the initiative was meant to show the elderly people how much they are loved, supported and cared for.

“This was done to show support, love and care to the elderly people because most of them are staying with their grandchildren and they only depend and survive on the grant,” Radebe said.

She explained that taking the gogos out was also about allowing them to enjoy themselves, especially because much of their grant money is used to buy groceries and provide for their families.

According to Radebe, the foundation wished for the elderly women to be respected, saying that this is how they wish to show the elderly women how much they love them.

The 87-year-old Phahlane thanked the community for the celebration and said that the gogos did not expect to be treated in this manner on Women’s Day.

“We went out today on Women’s Day, and we are enjoying ourselves. We didn’t expect such, and may God bless our hosts,” Phahlane said.

The Foundation said that the activity would allow them to provide more than just physical items. The idea behind the gathering was to help the elderly feel appreciated and have fun away from their daily routine.

Some sponsors helped the foundation organise the event, but they preferred to stay anonymous.
