According to Teko his financial mistakes which left him broke and without a plan came from not being wisely advised on how to handle money because he came from a less privileged background.

“Where I come from, I was not taught how to use money. Because I grew up in a society where people don’t know much about money and they cannot teach you on something they don’t have,” Teko explained.

It is no secret that many of South African football players find themselves battling with their finances. They become so overwhelmed with their salaries and begin spending on things that will later leave them broke.

Former footballers discuss football and finances.

Fredericks said, “Most footballers fall into that trap and I’m calling it a trap because in the footballing world there are expectations put on you when you become a professional player.

“You need to drive a good car, move to the suburbs, have the girls and you put yourself under pressure.”

Professional as well as upcoming footballers need to be financially cognisant of what they do with their money. Modise and Fredericks spoke of the importance of respecting money and understanding ones affordability.

“The small change that I did was to start respecting money and realising how valuable it is. I am grateful for coach Pitso who had a sit down with me a lot of times advising me about my finances,” said Teko.

“It’s important to find balance. When you work hard you need to reward yourself. But it must make sense, you need to understand your affordability,” Fredericks advised.
