Tearful and joyful day

Some cried and some were joyful of their first day of school.

It was a day full of tears and laughter as new pupils of AB Xuma Primary School in Orlando East started the first day of their school career.

To some it was an exciting day while others could not contain their tears. screaming that they wanted to go home.

Five-year-old Lwazi Nkosi said that he is excited that he is starting “big school”.

“I am going to make new friends I am so excited,” he said.

His mother, Amanda Nkosi, said that she is so happy to see how much her son has grown.

“I can’t believe that he is starting school, I wish him all the best. I want my son to get a good education and to be successful,” she said.

Lwazi is the third generation in his family to attend AB Xuma Primary, his mother and grandmother also attended the school.

“AB Xuma is a very good school. I am sure of this because I was also one of their pupils. I know that my son is in good hands,” she said.

Ncamisile Zitha a Grade R teacher said she is looking forward to teaching her new pupils.

“The first day is always the hardest – some of them cry, some want to go home but by the end of the day they are comfortable,” she said.

She said that in the first week most of the them get lost as they are not familiar with the school.

“To make it easier for ourselves we put different colour wristbands on their wrists in order to group them,” she said.
