Westbury and Riverlea gets a Local Drug Action committee to help the scourge of drugs.

Addressing the scourge of substance abuse in Region B was the theme of the launch of the ‘Local Drug Action Committee’ (LDAC).

The launch included the multimedia and substance abuse reduction programme where Westbury LDAC can share proposed programmes to be led by LDAC.

A group of young people and parents will be leading the substance abuse peer education programme.

Proposed activities include establishment of support groups where people can share sobriety and successful re-integration.

There are two wards in Region B that were pointed out by the Department of Social Development as vulnerable to substance abuse – Ward 69 (Westbury) and Ward 68 (Riverlea) – and LDAC’s has been established to help fight the scourge.

The purpose of the committee involves all sectors involved in substance abuse and related problems in a municipality such as justice, police, probation and correctional services, school, health, social development and community structure officials.

There has been representation from different departments and organisations were identified to participate in meetings to support the implementation of programmes aimed at reducing substance abuse.

Twenty-two organisations have been identified to serve and take part in meetings and help the Department of Social Development fight the scourge of drugs.
