Introduction of African languages at schools

Noordgesig Primary School to pilot the introduction of African languages in schools.

Noordgesig Primary is one of the schools that the Department of Education has chosen to pilot the introduction of African languages in schools.

MEC of Education Panyaza Lesufi said during his 100 days in office they have identified African languages which were previously marginalised.

“We identified the following languages which were previously marginalised as part of the incremental Introduction of African Languages IsiZulu, Sesotho, Setswana, Sepedi; Xitsonga and Afrikaans,” he said.

According to Lesufi the identified schools have received training and pupil teacher support material to support the curriculum.

“Based on the successful implementation of the pilot, the department will incrementally introduce the African languages in schools in Gauteng,” he said.
