Blood stocks on the rise
SANBS needs to maintain a blood stock level of 5 days at all times by collecting 3000 units of blood per day to meet the demand of the thousands of patients who are reliant on blood transfusions for their survival.
It may come as a great surprise that the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) says they aren’t experiencing any blood shortages as it had been the case in winter.
SANBS manager for communications, Vanessa Raju says blood stocks are doing very well, thanks to the public.
Raju says it’s the first time in December, comparing period to period, that a supply has gone up.
“We’re excited of this news, and encourage the public to commit to donating even more,” said Raju.
SANBS also offers lunch boxes to a limited number of donors.
Raju said: “We are not allowed to give incentives to donors but it’s the least we can do this festive season.
Minimum blood donor requirements:
- Ages between 16 and 65 years
- Weigh 50kg or more
- Good health
- Lead a sexually safe lifestyle
