D-day for the e-tolls report
Makhura is expected to deliver the assessment panel report today on the controversial e-tolls.
Gauteng Premier David Makhura is today expected to release the full details of the e-tolls assessment panel report, including recommendations.
Earlier reports suggested that experts had found the poor are largely paying for the e-tolls while those driving between Sandton, Bryanston and Houghton are avoiding the tolled roads.
Provincial government says a consultation process with national government had to be concluded before the assessment panel’s report could be released.
However, despite meetings between Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa and Makhura still underway, government has now decided to release a full report.
Makhura’s spokesperson Thabo Masebe says, “We are now able to release the report without compromising the consultation.”
The report was only expected to be released next month, but seems to have been leaked to the media.
It’s been reported that the e-tolls panel has recommended an extra fee to be paid annually towards e-tolling when motorists renew their vehicle licences instead of paying at the gantries.
The multi-billion rand e-toll system went live a year ago, but has been met with some resistance notably from Outa and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu).
