JMPD arrested 120 motorists for driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol during road safety and law enforcement operations across Johannesburg between August 24 and 30.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) arrested 120 motorists for driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol during enforcement operations across the City of Johannesburg between Monday, August 24, and Sunday, August 30.

According to JMPD, the arrests formed part of ongoing integrated road safety and law enforcement operations aimed at promoting safer roads and curbing reckless driving.

Officers from all operational regions, specialised units and Alcohol Evidence Centres conducted roadblocks, targeted driver checks and routine patrols throughout the week.

JMPD warned that driving under the influence of alcohol or intoxicating substances remains a serious criminal offence under the National Road Traffic Act.

The department said DUI poses a significant threat to road users and contributes to preventable crashes, injuries and fatalities.

JMPD said road safety is a collective responsibility and that officers would maintain a high-visibility presence and zero-tolerance approach across the city to protect residents, pedestrians and commuters.
