Celebrating youth month through dance

June 16 Memorial Dance Festival celebrates 15th year anniversary.

The June 16 Memorial Festival of Ballroom and Latin American celebrates 15 years of existence this year.

The dance festival which was established in 1993 by Paul Kgale and Esther Kgale as a contribution to youth development through dance has grown in and outside South Africa.

With its objective to develop world class dancers from poor and rural communities, the festival has managed to groom dancers not only from outside Gauteng but other countries as well such as Lesotho and Botswana.

This year’s festival took place at the Orlando Communal Hall on June 13, where different styles of dance were brought to stage by the youth.

There was Ballroom, Classic Show Dance, Latin American, South American Show Dance, Freestyle, Hip Hop and Social Dance.

The dancers described dance as “work of art in motion and a story waiting to be told”.
