Annual festival gives senior citizens a day to relax and celebrate

Around 390 senior citizens from Orange Farm, Eldorado Park, Westbury, and Ennerdale gather for a memorable day out.

Senior citizens revealed their dance moves as they enjoyed a day of relaxation, good music and lunch during the annual Senior Citizens Festival hosted by Sekgome Resort (SK) on October 17.

The annual event affords many elderly people from various clubs and old age homes in Orange Farm, Eldorado Park, Westbury and Ennerdale a fun time out.

Last year, they were surprised with helicopter rides, a first for many of them.

The theme for this year was ‘Dancing Through the Years’, where all efforts were made by the organisers to make the event feel like a festival for the seniors, with a stage setup and live performances.

According to Yolanda Duze from SK, the event was planned like the jazz festival, which many seniors enjoyed in the past through live performances.

“I wanted to give them a festival vibe. You know when they used to go to the Jazz Festival, the big stage and there’s a live performance,” she said.

The programme started with breakfast, followed by a live performance by a band and lunch.

The senior citizens also had an opportunity to enjoy free massages from Lulama Spa Beauty (LSB) and haircuts from Legends Barber (LB).

This year, SK partnered with Siz Catering, LB, LSB and UDO Sound and Staging.

For many of the senior citizens, the day was about more than the entertainment and activities. It was an opportunity to leave their old age homes, spend time outdoors and interact with other people.

Duze said the event welcomed about 390 senior citizens from various clubs and old age homes.

Duze also acknowledged the volunteers who helped make the event possible.

“The girls are so committed. They take this thing so seriously and work with joy. I appreciate them so much,” she said.

The volunteers are;

• Ashleigh Peacock

• Caitlyn Peacock

• Chloe Ryland

• Kesley-Ann Baaitjies

• Imaan Duze

• Melonie Fisher

• Zinan Fisher

• Caslyn Morris

• Shervaun Bracks

• Theola and JP Okkers
