Kliptown police warn of ATM scams

Residents are urged not to accept help from strangers when making withdrawals.

Kliptown police have issued an urgent warning to residents to be extra vigilant when withdrawing money from ATMs.

This follows an incident which happened at Mayibuye Garage in Pimville  on Saturday.

It is alleged that a man was withdrawing money from a Standard Bank ATM when a stranger offered to help him.

The ATM screen suddenly went blank and no money could be withdrawn.

The man then immediately received two SMS notifications about two withdrawals happening on his account.

These withdrawals were done at Maponya Mall according to the SMS notifications. One was for R2000 and the other for R3000.

No arrests have been made and police are still investigating.
