Credibility of policing in Westside questioned

DA wants thorough investigation on recent arrest of police colonel.

The Democratic Alliance has called for a thorough investigation of the recent arrest of a Sophiatown police colonel.

Last week a police colonel suspected of drug dealing with four other men from the Westside area were arrested on charges of drug trafficking.

James Lorimer Member of Parliament from the DA constituency has doubted the credibility of policing in the area.

“Questions need to be answered whether the MEC at a recent public meeting was concealing information at this meeting.

“They assured the public that there was no evidence of corruption within the station,” said Lorimer. Ward 86 councillor Steve Kotze mentioned resources and reaction.

“Residents were promised better policing but it has not happened.

“Resources need to be made available so that the SAPS can identify such cases early and deal with them,” said Kotze.

Lorimer further indicates that the DA calls for a thorough investigation into the matter particularly when it comes to whether any police officers at the station have also been colluding with drug dealers.

“If this is the case then they must face the full face of the law.

“It is crucial that management of the Sophiatown police station come up with a plan to ensure proper and regular police operations and patrols in the community,” said Lorimer.
