Repairs and replacement to the caved in ceilings at Eldridge Primary School is expected to be completed by early next week, this according to the department of education’s acting spokesperson Oupa Bodibe.
A second ceiling collapsed in a classroom earlier this week since construction at the school was put on hold in September.
No one was injured in both instances.
“The department has already sent work inspections to the school to do an onsite inspection and compile a works order with estimated costs to replace the collapsed ceiling,” Bodibe said.
Construction was put on hold after the principal of the school requested for this as he was not satisfied and demanded brick and mortar.
Pupils and teachers yesterday marched to Main Road demanding the department of education to act immediately and complete construction with better material.
The department conducted an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) on the site to assess the quality of the soil texture before they could commence with construction.
“The project is anticipated to commence in September for brick and mortar structure after going into an open tender system,” Bodibe said.
