Shops raided in Westbury and Coronationville

Expired products and illegal cigarettes were all taken by inspectors and JMPD in a raid.

Foreign national shop owners were given big fright today when unexpected raids were done by the City of Johannesburg’s Urban Health Inspectors and ISD- Integrated Service Delivery.

Upon inspection expired food and other products were found.

In one shop a full box of illegal cigarettes was repossessed namely RG and Savannah cigarettes.

The streets that they visited were Hay Avenue, Percy Peffer, Kretschmar, and Coronationville.

Shantell Smith operational manager from the City of Johannesburg Integrated Service Delivery Department said they plan on doing it regularly.

“We will be doing more rounds in the future and hope that the shop owners will learn with each time we come here,” said Smith.

A bakery in Coronationville that has been supplying shops with bread was also closed down due to an unhealthy environment and not meeting the health requirements.

Stats show that shops owned by foreign nationals in Westbury are well over 70%.

Johannesburg Metro Police Department accompanied the inspectors in the shops.
