Youth take centre stage at Jazz Festival

Jesse Maart is currently in rehearsals for an upcoming short film.

“Time travel was inspired by general conversations I had either eavesdropped on or old wives’ told by my parents and elders. Growing up I have been soaked in stories about ‘back in my or our day’.

“The highlights of these stories were always about the way in which they partied in at famous nightclubs like Club Status, Club Imagination, Out of Town and other venues like Share World.

“Another element which inspired this story is the music which we refer to as ‘old school’ and the wardrobe which is still very relevant today.

“I encourage every young adult who can relate to this and all who have lived through these times to come and experience this one-night-only show to reminisce with us,” said Keshia Maconi, one of the writers of the theatrical piece.

Raeez Jacobs attained a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of the Witwatersrand and completed a short acting course at the Brumilda Acting Academy.

He is also a published poet and writer with a keen interest in gender theory and anthropology. He was accepted at the New York Film Academy and is inspired by South African literature.

He said, “I was very inspired by the concept of time travel and having the opportunity to co-write and direct this story was very important to me because I really love music and the themes resonate with me.

“It speaks so much about our cultures, our heritage; where we come from, and what we celebrate, so it’s an important story to tell.”

“One of my main focuses is more on the creative arts side; I have recently created a brand called ‘Beads by F Shaano’. I have gained skills and knowledge in the events field for as long as I’ve been volunteering at the Eldorado Park Arts Foundation which is exactly three years now.

“I have ventured into different fields within the Arts Foundation like logistics, production and now project managing. I managed to learn how to work well within the community and surrounding areas too, drive different campaigns around social development and I aspire to continuously create positive change in people’s lives,” said Mayet.
