Sophiatown police play soccer too!

Meet the men in blue football team

Who said those police officers can’t play soccer? The Sophiatown police have started their very own soccer team to compete against other police departments.

“What makes them special is that in every game they use three residents from the community in the Sophiatown policing precinct to play for the team.

“This helps with the building of relationships between the community and the police. It builds the trust and helps in the fight against crime,” said Jerbes de Bruyn, the Sophiatown communications officer.

The team plays every Wednesday and according to de Bruyn, they have played three games so far in the inter police competition and won all three.

Their last game was against the team from the provincial office. The match ended with a score of 4-2.

“This also keeps the members of the station fit for the job in the fight against crime,” said de Bruyn.

If you would like to learn more about the team, want to make a contribution or would even like to play for the team, please contact warrant officer Mashele on 063 554 4685 or 011 670 6401.
