Learning goes south in Klipspruit West

It remains unclear as to whether teaching and learning will resume today at the Klipspruit West Secondary School. Learning was disrupted a week ago when residents locked the school gates denying teachers access to the premises.

Following this episode, the Gauteng Department of Education condemned the ‘unnecessary disruptions’ at Klipspruit West and further went on the record to say, “It is of concern that 11 educators did report to the school on September 19. They, however, reported to the district office after four (4) of their colleagues were prevented from entering the school premises.”

Department spokesman Steve Mabona said the disturbance resulted in the Grade 11 not writing their assessments. GDE revealed in a statement dated (Sep 19) that it would make alternative arrangements for all affected learners.

There are claims of racism at the school and the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) withdrew 30 teachers from Klipspruit West and other schools in Eldorado Park and surrounding areas (GDE established).

Mabona confirmed that the MEC for Gauteng Education, Panyaza Lesufi, held a meeting yesterday in Eldorado Park to discuss a way forward despite the ongoing tensions.

The South African Rights Commission have launched an investigation into the matter since this situation involved allegations of racism. The investigation will determine the fundamental causes of the problem we are faced with today,” he said.

Grade 12 learners are busy with their preliminary examinations at a different venue. Klipspruit West learners will be taken to camps and will be stationed there during the exam period.

Mabona said the department would beef-up security to ensure that they have full control of accessibility at the schools by teachers and learners.

“It looks as if some residents have taken over the school because they come in and out at any time of the day,” he added.

Other reports suggested that an interim structure will be formed to run the school.

GDE is expected to meet with SADTU to find a solution to the problem.
