Ever wondered what was happening in our neighbouring communities? Well if you love all this fabulous and brainy then the brunch launch for the Face of Vilakazi Street (FOV) would have been something that you’d enjoy.

Soweto is at the centre of events that are hip and happening and many of our readers go there for entertainment. The Westside Urban News reporter went to see what the buzz was all about.

Vilakazi Street is famous for being the home of former president Nelson Mandela, and a young lady named Lungile Buhali, known locally as Tyra Banks, decided to give the street an ambassador.

Buhali was the former Miss Soweto in 2014 and she started this initiative in April last year with the vision of creating something that is sustainable and tangible.

Buhali said that pageantry was becoming all about looks and not about the mind.

“We are looking at five components, someone with tenacity, great leadership skills, someone who is knowledgeable, very educated, and cultural with an understanding that being the typical girl next door doesn’t define you,” she said.

Lesego Senoela, public relations manager of FOV added, “We saw it fit that this iconic street needed a face, an ambassador to represent it, someone who’s bold, fearless someone who is able to speak her mind without forgetting that she’s also human and bringing in her qualities and matching up with iconic people on the street.”

Although Landrover Jaguar Westrand was announced to be the new sponsor of the pageant, securing other sponsorship is still very important for the brand.

Attendees pledged their support through donations and also participated in The Box Shop clothes auction as the top 40 modelled the clothing.

Vilakazi Street restaurateurs were there to show their support with other sponsors like Perfect Choice who provided free hair trials for attendees.

At the moment the pageant has selected its top 40 list of ladies who are still going to be cut short to 26, then from there, the top 12 will be selected to compete for the crown next year.
