We believe that the children are our future

As the years go by, there are many children who forget how to be children. This is not because they want to act this way, but is dictated by their circumstances at home.

Some children are forced to be adults even before they are teenagers. So National Children’s Day (NCD) is a reminder that all children should be children.

NCD is a day when they are reminded that they are children and that they need to behave as children and play. They need to know that their community loves them and wants what is best for them.

Leonie Petersen from Articulating Life, said, “We want children to have great memories about growing up in this community which has so many ills.”

On Saturday, November 4, to kick off the fun-filled day, parents and children gathered at the Shopping Centre in the Main Road in Eldorado Park. They were led by a marching band called Girls Brigade (GB).

The band is an inter-denominated organisation which has been around for 125 years. Girls’ Brigade is based in Eldorado Park and Westbury but it doesn’t end there.

Children are the future.

They have many brigades nationally, all over Africa and a few brigades internationally in countries like England, Scotland, the Cook Islands, the Caribbean Islands and Australia.

They work on a four-square programme which caters to the educational, service, spiritual and physical needs of their members. Part of their service square activities is similar to the service they conducted on November 4.

The march started at the shopping centre and ended at the Don Mateman Civic Centre where the children were given a motivational speech just before they were divided into their different age groups.

The children participated in a dance lesson and had a day of fun at the petting zoo area, arts and crafts, face painting and even horseback riding.

It is easy to give out presents, but your presence in a child’s life is greater than a present that will be forgotten in a year, your presence will always be remembered.

Petersen said, “Thank you for being part of the transformation in Eldorado Park. This one act of kindness could just turn around the life of a potential molester, potential murderer, and potential addict. Let us not grow weary in doing well.”
