WATCH: Saving the world one EcoScout at a time
Environmental conservation is key.

The EnvironMentorz, an environmental awareness organisation, are dedicated to educating the Eldorado Park community about the importance of looking after the environment and they are starting with the youth.
All children between the ages of six and 15 were invited to an environmental education holiday programme held at Kliptown Primary School in Eldorado Park, Extension Nine.
The programme was started to keep children busy during the school holidays. Kaylene Jegels, who is a part of the EnvironMentorz team, said that the programme helps keep the children off the streets.

“The youth of Eldorado Park is so important to us and we believe that you are never too young to try and save the environment, that is the reason we started this programme. We want to teach the youngsters skills that they will remember forever, hopefully, they will teach their parents too,” said Jegels.
The holiday programme consisted of litter and waste management as well as water conservation. The main focus was to teach the youngsters that they can start protecting the environment even though they are young.
“The children now understand the importance of saving what is left of the environment,” said Jegels.

After the classes, the children played games and were given the opportunity to interact and have fun with the other EcoScouts.
On June 28, the EcoScouts were treated to a hike at the Kliprivier Nature Reserve where they saw zebra’s, springboks and wildebeest. The hike was sponsored and arranged by City Parks.
“The children learnt a very important lesson during the hike. They learned to embrace challenges and to never give up. The hike was a challenge for many because it was uphill most of the time, but our EcoScouts persevered and they eventually finished the hike.
“When they got to the top, they saw all the beautiful animals. This was the reward for their hard work and efforts. The lesson here was that if one works hard, you will be rewarded,” said Jegels.
