11-year-old Lynnton marches to his own drumbeat

"This is a big deal for me because with the Johannesburg Symphony we will be focusing on remaking music from famous Disney songs. I am so excited, I have been practicing every day and I know I will learn a lot from this experience."

Lynnton Du Plessis (11), has big dreams of becoming a professional drummer and it seems his dream is not far out of reach.

The youngster from Eldorado Park Extension Eight, attends school at Eldocrest Primary School and has entered various competitions-winning first place for all of them. The recent competitions he participated were the Segarona Gala’s at both district and provincial level.

According to his parents Lionel and Yolinda, he started playing the drums when was a toddler. “He used to play his beats on buckets and would use my pots every chance he got. He was able to play really well from a young age, that is the reason we decided to buy him his first drum kit when he was five years old. I think that was the best decision we have ever made because he is truly talented, he taught himself how to play,” said Yolinda.

Lynnton has dreams of banging his own beat.

Lynnton will be playing as part of the Johannesburg Symphony on August 23. “This is a big deal for me because with the Johannesburg Symphony we will be focusing on remaking music from famous Disney songs. I am so excited, I have been practicing every day and I know I will learn a lot from this experience,” he said.

The young drumming prodigy’s parents said that they were both proud of their boy. “He surprises me with how good he is. I sometimes cannot believe that he taught himself how to play. We are excited for his future as a drummer,” said Lionel.
