KYP says ‘owls are beautiful animals’
'People are scared of owls because of the myth that they are a sign of witchcraft'.
Most people are scared of owls because of the myth that they are a sign of witchcraft, but owls are beautiful animals and their presence may have a great impact on the environment.
Kliptown Youth Programme (KYP) recently participated in an owl release programme which is an initiative by Owl Project, a non-profit organisation (NPO) which aims to teach children about owl care and to look after owls and also teach them about the value of the birds in the township.
Project coordinator, Delina Chipape visited KYP on Thursday, August 17 to conduct an owl release programme. Rana Naven sponsored the release box and food for the owls.
Children from KYP were tasked to feed the owls for a period of 20 days prior they are released; two Barn owls were placed inside the owl release box.

“The idea behind the initiative is to create a friendly environment for the owl and to urge people to look after them. Soweto experiences a lot of rodent issues of which owls will be solutions to,” said Chipape.
All the owls inside the release box came from the Booysens Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) due to injury and they were taken to the Johannesburg Wildlife Vet for Care.
According to Chipape, a family of Barn owls can control up to 2500 rats per year.
