Mothers get schooled on breastfeeding
"Breastfeeding creates a special bond with your baby. Breastfeeding is also good for mothers."
Every Monday pregnant women and new mothers gather at Sydney Maseko in Jabavu to attend their Flourish classes.
Last Monday women were educated on the importance of breastfeeding and women were encouraged to breastfeed their babies.
The theme made mothers aware of the advantages of breastfeeding and taught them about the nutrients found in natural breast milk. Mothers participated in quiz questions by answering with true or false and they highlighted precautions.

Mothers were urged to always remember to use clean hands and containers. They were encouraged to breastfeed their babies in public.
Mothers heard that they should not look at breastfeeding as time wasting but they can express the milk for daily feeding.
Member of Flourish Violent Mazibuko said, “Breastfeeding is not only the best thing for your baby. It’s also good for you and even for the environment.

“Breastfeeding creates a special bond with your baby. Breastfeeding is also good for mothers, it is a natural contraceptive because it interrupts the menstrual cycle and it protects women against breast and ovarian cancer.”
The theme also emphasised the following advantages of breasting:
- Reduces stress Convenience, one does not need time to prepare the milk
- Breastfeeding can protect baby from unnecessary illnesses
- Breastfeeding increases family’s budget
- Breast milk has 100% required nutrients for babies
- Baby experiences less nappy rash and thrush
- Breast milk is sterile
