Protective hairstyles for National Curly Girls

My natural hair journey.

The natural hair journey has its ups and its downs and for many of us still getting into the routine of ‘going natural,’ it can become a bit too much.

As I explained in the previous article, at the very beginning of my journey, taking the natural hair journey means that you are taking your hair back to its original state.

Over years of using heat, colouring, straighteners and hair products which contain silicone, sulphates, and parabens, just to name a few, you can take your hair out of its original state. So, for me, going natural means refraining from all of the above methods.

One of the things that I learnt during my first few weeks of going natural was to use protective hairstyles. Protective hairstyles are those that stop your hair from going through more damage.

It’s those hairstyles that you can keep while your hair is being tucked in. Some girls put in extensions, or they use weaves or wigs to protect their natural hair.

Box braids, faux locs, twists, and cornrows are just a few of the protective hairstyles used. I have never had any extensions, weaves or wigs on my head although they are usually recommended. I decided to look for methods that work for my hair. Methods that save money and still gets the job done.

Taking the natural hair journey is expensive. Luckily for me, I have long hair, so I braid and twist my hair. Since I haven’t ironed my hair in a while, my hair actually stays in.

When doing a protective hairstyle make sure that you moisturise your hair. I use a curling cream with many oils in, as well as flaxseed gel on my hair, I add more product to those very dry frizzy areas and then I twist my hair and it stays in.

This protective hairstyle also reduces tangling of the hair and unnecessary knots. If you are taking the journey, learn what works for your hair.
