A year later-Remembering murder victim Shaynice Talla
A park was created in memory of 4-year-old Shaynice Talla.
September 27 marked the anniversary of the brutal murder of four-year-old Shaynice Talla, whose lifeless body was found after a community search- her body was found discarded in an open drain in Eldorado Park Ext 2.
A year later, in memory of Shaynice, residents joined forces to create a day filled with positivity. Members of the Local Drug Action Committee (LDAC) organised a programme for the day that started promptly at 10 am.
LDAC members located a dumpsite on the corner of Mahonie and Mapelaberg Streets in Ext 4 and vowed to transform it into a safe space for children to play.
The Eldorado Park community worked together to clean up the site and children as young as seven years old, joined in to clean the area. When the area was spotless, the community placed tyres and bricks to create a playground that would benefit the children of Eldos.
“It was so heartwarming to see the community come together and work together so well, it was an emotional day for all of us, it was a special day,” said LDAC chairperson Chery Pillay.
At 3pm a cooked lunch was served to every one who participated and at 5 pm the community gathered at the drain where the little girl’s body was found. Candles and flowers were placed in memory of little Shaynice Talla.

Shamila Khan, who is Shaynice’s aunt, said that after a full year the death of her niece is still extremely painful and that the day brought back so many sad and traumatic memories.
“Through all this pain, we are grateful to the community for their support. It brings comfort to know that something great came out of all the tragedy – a park will be erected in honour of our Shaynice, that is something special,” she
said.
Pillay said that the LDAC team, with the help of the community will continue to fight for the safety of our children.
