Never too late for your dream

Joseph Marumo said, "We come to sing, praise and worship God because He has kept us and still is with us in our old age".

Senior Citizens from Diepkloof have figured out that instead of sitting at home during the day with the remote in hand and some magazines is not mentally healthy, and that you are never too old to do what you love.

The Diepkloof Senior Citizens Choir was formed approximately eight years ago when there was a realisation of how big Diepkloof is and that all the areas pretty much have pensioners who grew up singing and needed a hobby.

Mpeo Maboe, Nonny Sebobane, Dorah Lebeloane and Winnie Ramosa sing at old age.

The chairperson for the choir Jonathan Moagi explained how they meet at the Diepkloof Multi-Purpose Center to sing in the choir and support one another, he said, “We sought to join the pensioners from Diepkloof who love to sing and to continue singing because that is what we love to do and it keeps us peaceful and content.”

The person who was with the choir from its inception, Martha Muduvhadzi explained that when they started they were only eight, however, they were set to doing what they love and now they have the privilege to boast at least five trophies.

Joseph Ramarumo, Koos Nong and Jonathan Moagi love singing.

The senior’s choir has been invited to various events all around Soweto and Johannesburg, Mpeo Maboe said, “Singing in the choir releases stress and just having the opportunity to meet with the other gogos is a relief.”

Joseph Marumo said, “We come to sing, praise and worship God because He has kept us and still is with us in our old age.”

Caswell Xaba who is part of the choir and is not old enough for pension yet said that he joined the choir one time after hearing the elders sing their melodies and hymns, he said, “Since joining the choir, I have learned unity because even when a choir member loses a lost one, the other members come to the party and always offer support.”

The senior citizens are still accepting more members and any person who would like to join them can visit the Diepkloof Multi-Purpose Center.
