JMPD officers intercept illegal firearms and ammunition in Lufhereng
Investigations into the firearms' origin are ongoing.
Two men were arrested and illegal firearms and ammunition recovered during a crime prevention operation by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department’S (JMPD) Tactical Response Unit (TRU) in Lufhereng on Monday, August 24.
According to JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla, officers received information about a suspected illegal firearm transaction involving two men travelling in a white Toyota Vitz.
“Officers deployed to the area and conducted surveillance before spotting a vehicle matching the description. They activated their blue lights and sirens and intercepted the vehicle,” he said.

Fihla said officers ordered the two occupants to exit the vehicle while they searched.
He further stated that the search resulted in the recovery of a rifle with a magazine, a pistol with a magazine, and live ammunition matching the calibre of the firearms.
Both were arrested at the scene.
“The police’s Local Criminal Record Centre was called to assist with securing and processing the evidence,” said Fihla.
Fihla added that the suspects are facing charges related to the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
Investigations into the origin of the firearms are ongoing.
