Send a tip-off about an illegal dumping activity via WhatsApp

“I urge residents to take clear photos showing the culprit, the vehicle with registration number and the waste dumped and send the photos with the date, time and location."

Did you know that you can send a tip-off about an illegal dumping activity via WhatsApp? Things just got better. Technological advancement has enabled many government departments to get innovative and to improve their levels of communication with the general public.

The Department of Public Safety is coming down hard on illegal dumpers. Cllr Michael Sun urges city residents to play a role in the fight against illegal dumping for the sake of their health and the environment.

“I urge residents to take clear photos showing the culprit, the vehicle with registration number and the waste dumped and send the photos with the date, time and location.

“All tip-offs remain anonymous. Together with you residents’ help, we are certain that we can put illegal dumping in the city to an end,” said Cllr Sun.

City of Johannesburg’s Environmental Health Department encourages us to care of the environment by simply reporting the people we witness dumping illegally.

“It was important for residents to care for their environment. We have a serious problem with illegal dumping. Although residents often witness illegal dumping, they choose not to report the offenders,” said Fatima Cordom from Environmental Health (March 11, 2017)

Many of us are familiar with the A Re Sebetseng which translates ‘Together, let us make Johannesburg work towards a cleaner a city’.

This campaign was launched way back on August 14, 2017. It is the brainchild of Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba who was inspired by how clean Rwanda was during a visit there in 2015. In particular, he was inspired by the cleanliness of the capital city, Kigali.

Send tip-offs via WhatsApp to 082 779 1361, help us keep our city clean #AReSebetseng and help the City of Joburg keep our city safe by reporting these lawbreakers.
